Ice makers on South Sound water
The ice maker is the fussiest thing in the kitchen, and the water around here gives it plenty to be fussy about. Lacey and Olympia pump groundwater that is moderately hard; the wells at the lakes, in Boston Harbor, out in Yelm, Rainier, Tenino and Rochester run harder still, with iron and sometimes sand. Every drop passes through a thumb-sized fill valve and a tube thinner than a pencil. Scale builds, the fill shrinks, the cubes get small and hollow and then stop. Fill valves, maker heads and filters for the usual Whirlpool, GE, LG and Frigidaire refrigerators ride in the van, which covers the whole ring out of the Marvin Rd shop.
Beyond the water, the failures are mechanical and cold. The fill tube freezes shut when the valve drips after closing, and the maker sits with an empty mold. The ejector motor or the mold thermostat quits and the tray never dumps. On French-door units in Hawks Prairie and DuPont, the fresh-food ice compartment loses its seal, frosts over and jams. A bad water filter or a kinked line behind a refrigerator pushed too far into an alcove starves the whole system. Last month in West Olympia: an LG French door on a Cooper Point well, cubes like crescents of frost, fill valve scaled to a trickle, replaced along with the filter.
What goes wrong with built-in ice makers, and why
No ice at all, mold empty
Water never reaches the mold, whether from a scaled fill valve, an iced-up fill tube, a shut saddle valve beneath the sink, or a filter that has outlived its usefulness. Supply is checked at the valve, the solenoid is metered, the tube is thawed and inspected, and whatever blocks the fill gets replaced.
Small, hollow or cloudy cubes
A weak fill from scale or low pressure, so the mold never gets its full charge, or well minerals in the water itself. The fill volume gets measured and the valve tested, and a throttled valve is replaced. Cloudy ice from a well is frequently just the water talking, and we tell you that.
Mold full, nothing drops
The ejector motor, the mold thermostat or the control on the maker head has failed. The unit sits with a frozen block. We test the head’s motor and heater, and replace the head as an assembly when that is the sensible repair.
Off taste or smell in the ice
A worn-out filter, a refrigerator crowded with open containers, or iron and manganese in well water, all common at the lakes and in Boston Harbor. The filter is swapped, the bin and mold are scrubbed, the line is flushed, and if the house water needs a remedy of its own we say so.
Ice compartment frosted or jammed (French door)
The door-mounted ice room on Samsung and LG units loses its gasket seal or a duct freezes, and the auger locks in a block. We thaw, reseal, check the fan and duct, and replace the gasket or the auger motor where needed.
Puddle by the ice maker
Possible sources are a cracked fill tube, a valve that never closes completely, or a split inlet fitting behind the refrigerator. The unit gets pulled out to trace the drip, the faulty tube or valve is replaced, and we make sure the supply line is not pinched against the wall.
The ice maker visit
- Pressure and fill volume measured first, so the maker is not blamed for a water problem
- Solenoid on the fill valve and the maker head metered, tube checked for ice
- One written figure, with the diagnosis fee rolled into it
- Valves, tubes, heads and filters for common refrigerators on the van
- First harvest confirmed before the technician leaves, warranty on the invoice
Ice maker repair for the unit inside the refrigerator
The visit opens with the water. Supply pressure is read at the line, the valve is timed to see how much a real fill delivers, and the solenoid goes on the meter. Next the fill tube comes out, to check for ice or a split. After that the maker head is tested: its mold thermostat, its ejector motor and the small heater that frees the cubes. A French-door unit gets its ice compartment gasket and fan checked too. A filter past its date is flagged, because it starves everything downstream. You hear which part failed in everyday words, and one figure is written before any work starts. We fix the maker built into the refrigerator; freestanding ice machines are a different trade.
Most of the refrigerators we open are Maytag, Kenmore, KitchenAid, Frigidaire, LG, GE and Whirlpool, from the builder-grade units in Hawks Prairie and DuPont to the newer French doors in the Tumwater subdivisions. For a second home on Eld Inlet or a cabin on Long Lake, the owner can say yes from anywhere and receive the paperwork, warranty included, in an email; note any gate code and dog when you book. Shift workers can book early or late windows, or Saturday. Sign off on the written repair and the diagnosis fee ends up as the opening slice of that total; turn it down and your bill is that fee, no more. Pricing comes after the diagnosis, on paper, never by phone.
Asked in Lacey & Olympia
My ice maker in Lacey stopped in the summer heat. Is that related?
Sometimes. A garage refrigerator in July, or a kitchen unit with a felted condenser, runs warm enough that the freezer drifts and the mold never reaches the temperature that triggers a harvest. Cleaning the coil and checking the freezer temperature comes before any ice maker part. If the freezer is fine, the maker or the valve is the suspect.
We are on a well in Yelm and the ice is cloudy and small. Is the maker failing?
Probably the water first. Well minerals cloud the ice and scale the fill valve until the mold fills short. The fill gets measured, a throttled valve gets replaced, the filter gets changed and the mold gets cleaned. If the cubes are the right size and just cloudy, the maker is fine and the water is the story.
Will you service a freestanding or under-counter ice machine?
Not those. We handle the maker installed in a refrigerator or freezer, the kind most kitchens in Lacey, Olympia and the county have. Countertop nugget makers, dedicated ice machines and commercial units belong to another trade, and we would rather tell you on the phone than charge you a visit fee to say it in your kitchen.
The ice compartment on our French-door fridge in Olympia is frozen solid. Can it be fixed?
Yes. The door-mounted ice room on Samsung and LG units frosts over when its gasket or duct lets warm air in, and the auger locks up. We thaw it, find the leak in the seal, check the fan, and replace the gasket or the auger motor. It is a common repair and the parts are often on the van.
What is the diagnosis fee paying for on an ice maker visit in Thurston County?
Travel anywhere in the ring around Lacey, the water and fill measurements, tests on the valve and maker head, and a written repair figure. If you approve, the visit fee becomes the first slice of that figure. If you decline, that fee is the extent of what you owe. Nothing gets priced until it has been measured.

From the first phone call to the last test cycle
- You reach out
Dispatch picks a two-hour slot with you, most often today or tomorrow, and calls again once the van rolls away from the shop on Marvin Rd.
- Measure first
An amp clamp, thermometer or ohmmeter goes on the machine before anyone says what is wrong. Then the dead part gets named in words anyone can follow.
- The number, written
Repair cost goes on the ticket as one total with the visit fee already baked in. Say yes or say no; nobody bills by the hour while you think.
- Repair on the spot
Pumps, valves, heaters, igniters, rollers and boards for the usual models travel in the bins behind the driver, which closes most jobs on that first stop. A part on order means a second trip at no added charge.
- Test and paperwork
You watch a full cycle run, the floor and panels are left as we found them, and an emailed invoice carries the written warranty term.
Ice makers in Lacey & Olympia: a single visit and a single price.
One call sets a two-hour window. The technician arrives with a meter, the fix is priced on the ticket with the visit fee already tucked into it, and the invoice spells out the warranty. Yelm and Ruddell Rd get identical terms.
