Dryers under 50 inches of rain
A dryer around here works against the weather. The vent runs out through a wall into air that stays wet from October to May, the lint inside never dries, and it packs into a grey paste that a brush will not move. Every dryer call from the Marvin Rd shop includes that vent, whether the house is a 1970s split-level on Ruddell Rd, a hospital-district rental off Lilly Rd, a second-floor laundry in a Hawks Prairie two-story, or a Tumwater subdivision house on Trosper with the dryer in the garage. Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater and DuPont run natural gas from the mains; out in Yelm, Rainier, Tenino and Rochester the dryer is often propane, and a badly converted one burns yellow.
The failures follow the vent. When the run chokes, heat builds in the drum until the thermal fuse trips, and from then on an electric dryer tumbles without warmth. Gas dryers lose the igniter or a flame sensor and click without lighting, or the gas valve coils weaken and the flame quits after a few seconds. Drum rollers and the idler pulley wear flat and scream. Belts snap on the stacked units in DuPont and the townhomes off Marvin Rd. A recent visit in East Olympia: a GE electric behind a 25-foot vent run to the roof, element fine, fuse open, and a bucket of lint paste out of the duct before the new fuse went in.
Tracing dryer trouble back to its source
Tumbles, no heat at all
An electric dryer that spins cold has usually lost its thermal fuse, burned out its element, or tripped the high-limit thermostat; a gas machine points to the igniter or the gas valve coils. Each part gets its own ohmmeter reading, whatever tests bad is swapped for a fresh one off the van, and then we chase down what made it overheat, usually the vent.
Heats, but every load needs a second run
Airflow. The vent may be packed, crushed behind the machine, or simply too long for the blower, and a film of fabric-softener residue on the moisture sensor can also cut a cycle short. Air speed gets measured where it leaves the house, then we clear or correct the run and wipe the sensor bars.
Squealing or thumping as it turns
Flattened drum rollers, an idler pulley that has run dry, or a rear bearing that has given out. The racket worsens until the belt breaks. The cabinet comes open, the rollers and idler are swapped together, and the belt gets a look while we are inside.
Gas dryer clicks, flame does not stay lit
The igniter glows and the flame sensor or valve coils give up a moment later. On propane in Yelm or Tenino a poor conversion shows as a yellow, lazy flame. We read the sensor and coils, replace what failed, and check the flame color.
Motor hums, drum stays still
A snapped belt, one that has slipped off the idler, or a motor with a seized bearing. The belt is a quick job with the part on the van. A motor is priced on paper before anything is ordered, and the return visit to fit it carries no second fee.
Stops mid-cycle, hot smell
A motor overheating on a lint-choked blower wheel, or a cycling thermostat stuck. A hot smell means we also check the vent run and the space behind the machine for scorching. We clean the blower housing, replace the thermostat, and confirm exhaust temperature.
The dryer visit
- Every suspect part read on the meter, fuse to igniter, before one is condemned
- Vent airflow measured at the outlet and the run inspected on every visit
- One written figure, with the diagnosis fee baked into that number
- The van stocks fuses, elements, igniters, rollers and belts
- A complete heated cycle, exhaust temperature read, warranty printed on the invoice
Dryer repair that starts at the vent and ends with a meter reading
The diagnosis begins outdoors, with a hand held to the vent hood while the dryer runs; a feeble draft there explains half the problem before we touch a screw. Then the ohmmeter goes to work on the thermal fuse, both thermostats (high-limit and cycling) and the heating element, or on a gas machine the igniter along with the flame sensor and the coils on the gas valve. An amp clamp checks the motor, and with the drum lifted out the rollers, idler and belt are tested by hand. Expect the bad part named in ordinary words, followed by why it failed and a single figure on paper. Should the machine have spent years running hot, we also tell you whether it deserves the money.
Regular work covers Kenmore, Amana, Speed Queen, Electrolux, Frigidaire, LG, Samsung, GE, Maytag and Whirlpool dryers, including the matched Whirlpool and GE sets the builders put in around DuPont, Hawks Prairie and the Littlerock Rd subdivisions. For rentals near Evergreen and Saint Martin’s, the owner okays the job by phone or email and gets the photos, the invoice and the warranty emailed later. Shift workers at the hospital and the Capitol Campus get the early or late slot, or Saturday. The number you approve has the diagnosis fee sitting in it from the start; if you refuse, that fee is your whole cost and the findings stay with you. The price is set after the diagnosis and written down, never quoted from a phone description.
Asked in Lacey & Olympia
My Lacey dryer runs but never warms up. Is this a major job?
Typically no. On an electric dryer the culprit is often a thermal fuse, cycling thermostat or burned element, and on gas an igniter; the van holds each of them, so the fix normally wraps up in one visit. The larger question is why it overheated, which in Lacey is nearly always the vent, so we check that before we leave.
Do you convert dryers to propane for houses in Yelm or Tenino?
We repair propane dryers and correct a conversion that is burning yellow, sooting the drum or shutting off early, using the maker’s orifice and regulator setting for that model. Gas piping and tank setting fall outside our work. If the flame looks wrong on a new dryer, call before the drum takes on a smell.
Do you handle dryer vent cleaning in Olympia, or just the dryer itself?
Whatever stretch of duct is reachable from the dryer’s back panel and the exterior hood gets cleaned, which covers most homes, and airflow is measured before and after. A long vent to a roof in a South Capitol two-story or a crushed flex duct behind a Hawks Prairie stacked pair gets sorted or pointed out so it can be rerouted.
The dryer squeals in an apartment near Saint Martin’s. Can the landlord approve by phone or email?
Yes. You let the technician in, the drum comes out, and the owner gets the written figure by email, usually rollers and an idler. On approval the repair happens on the spot, and the invoice with the warranty term goes to the owner by email. Put the gate code and the dog’s name in the request.
Which work does the diagnosis fee pay for at a dryer visit?
The drive to your door anywhere around Lacey, meter readings across the fuse, thermostats, heating element and igniter, the vent inspection, and the written figure. Should the repair go ahead, the meter-visit fee remains a component of the total. Pass on it, and your bill ends with that fee. There are no repair prices over the phone because nothing has been measured yet.

From the first phone call to the last test cycle
- You reach out
Dispatch picks a two-hour slot with you, most often today or tomorrow, and calls again once the van rolls away from the shop on Marvin Rd.
- Measure first
An amp clamp, thermometer or ohmmeter goes on the machine before anyone says what is wrong. Then the dead part gets named in words anyone can follow.
- The number, written
Repair cost goes on the ticket as one total with the visit fee already baked in. Say yes or say no; nobody bills by the hour while you think.
- Repair on the spot
Pumps, valves, heaters, igniters, rollers and boards for the usual models travel in the bins behind the driver, which closes most jobs on that first stop. A part on order means a second trip at no added charge.
- Test and paperwork
You watch a full cycle run, the floor and panels are left as we found them, and an emailed invoice carries the written warranty term.

One call sets a two-hour window. The technician arrives with a meter, the fix is priced on the ticket with the visit fee already tucked into it, and the invoice spells out the warranty. Yelm and Ruddell Rd get identical terms.
