The route

Working Steilacoom

Steilacoom is the top of our ring. The van goes north on I-5 past the refuge, off at exit 119, and along DuPont-Steilacoom Rd until the trees open and the water shows. The town sits on a bluff over the Sound with the ferry dock at the bottom of Union Ave and the old commercial blocks on Lafayette St. Most of the houses date from the 1880s to the 1920s, some earlier, and they sit close together on short streets that drop toward Sunnyside Beach and Saltar’s Point. Newer subdivisions climb the hill toward Chambers Creek and Steilacoom Blvd. Parking is tight near the dock on ferry days, so the technician calls when the van is on the hill.

Old houses set the pattern here. Kitchens are small and the refrigerator is often an inch from a wall it was never meant to fit. Laundry is in the basement, down a stair that turns twice, which decides how we carry a washer out and back. Salt air off the water eats condenser coils and the steel of a dryer cabinet faster than anywhere else we go. City water keeps scale moderate, but the wiring was replaced piecemeal over a century, and some outlets feed a modern dryer through circuits that were never planned for it. So the calls run to coils rusted through, drain pumps in damp basements, igniters in gas ranges retrofitted into a wood-stove kitchen, and boards after a windstorm.

What Steilacoom calls about

What is failingHow it usually looks in Steilacoom
RefrigeratorsCondenser coils corroded by salt air, fans seized with damp, defrost systems on units squeezed into small kitchens with no airflow.
WashersBasement front-loaders with mildewed gaskets, drain pumps holding water, machines on uneven concrete walking on spin.
DryersCabinets rusted at the seams, thermal fuses opening on long vents to an old foundation wall, rollers worn.
DishwashersRetrofit units under counters cut for a smaller box, drain hoses looped wrong, boards and latches from the 2000s.
Ovens & rangesGas ranges added to 1900s kitchens with weak igniters, wall ovens in 1960s remodels burning out elements.
Ice makersMakers on refrigerators fed through old shut-off valves, fill lines kinked behind cabinets, modules worn out.

Fridge

Fridge · above the ferry dock

A refrigerator in a 1905 house two blocks up from the dock, running from dusk to dawn and never getting cold. Salt rust has turned the condenser coil orange, and the fan hardly moves. Whatever can be cleaned gets cleaned, the fan is replaced, and the owner sees the corrosion up close, which makes coil cleaning a yearly habit.

Washer

Washer · a Lafayette St basement

A front-loader at the bottom of a stair that turns twice. It holds water and smells. Drain pump jammed, gasket black with mildew from a basement that never gets above damp. We clear the pump, fit a new gasket, and leave the door open with a note about why.

Range

Range · on the bluff

A gas range dropped into a kitchen that once held a wood stove. The oven igniter glows, dims and gives up. The igniter is weak, and the flexible gas line behind it was kinked on install. A new igniter, the line rerouted, and the oven at 350 with a probe to prove it.

Dryer

Dryer · toward Chambers Creek

An electric dryer in a newer house on the hill, tumbling cold. Its element has gone open, and the crawlspace vent sags into a low spot that holds water. New element and fuse go in, the sagging section is drained and rerouted, and a load of towels runs until the exhaust temperature looks right.

Refrigerator repair in Steilacoom

A fee for the meter visit, then part of the repair price · no quote before the measurement, no price off the ticket

A refrigerator on the Steilacoom bluff works harder than it should. Salt air rusts the condenser, the small kitchen leaves no room for airflow, and the unit runs long hours to hold 38. Then a windstorm blinks the power and it will not restart. Compressor amps get metered, the coil and fan get inspected, the failed piece is named, and one number is written up. Approving it means the diagnostic fee is already sitting in that sum.

NoticedTraced toSorted by
Runs all night, food only coolCondenser coil corroded and matted, fan wornCleaning or replacing the coil where possible, a new fan, a temperature check

Silent after the stormStart relay or control board damaged by the surgeTesting the compressor, replacing the relay or board
My refrigerator in an old Steilacoom kitchen has no air around it. Does that matter?

Yes. A unit boxed in on three sides runs hot, and heat is what kills compressors and boards. We clean the coil, check the clearance and tell you the minimum the maker asks for. If a cabinet trim can come off to give it air, that is a small change that adds years.

Washer repair in Steilacoom

A fee for the meter visit, then part of the repair price · no quote before the measurement, no price off the ticket

Steilacoom washers live in basements: damp, cool, and reached by a stair with a turn in it. Front-load gaskets grow mildew, drain pumps sit in a cold puddle, and the machine rocks on a concrete floor poured in another century. Whatever yours is up to, testing happens right at the machine, in place, and a single price lands on paper. That price already carries the diagnostic fee, and if you skip the repair, that fee settles the visit entirely.

Basement symptomRoot of itRepair we make
Standing water in the drumBlocked drain pump, or a pump motor gone openUnclog or swap out the pump, rinse the hose, drain test
Black smell from the doorGasket mildewed in a damp basementReplace the gasket, clean the sump, advise on leaving the door ajar
Thumps and creeps mid-spinMachine off level on old concrete, dampers wornLevel and shim, replace the dampers or rods
Can a Steilacoom basement washer be fixed without carrying it upstairs?

Almost always. Pumps, gaskets, locks, boards, dampers and valves are all done with the machine pulled forward and tipped. The only jobs that need the machine out of the basement are full tub or bearing rebuilds, and on a machine that age we usually write the number and let you weigh it against replacement.

Dryer repair in Steilacoom

A fee for the meter visit, then part of the repair price · no quote before the measurement, no price off the ticket

The dryer in a Steilacoom basement vents through a stone or concrete foundation, often in a duct that has been there since the 1970s and has a low spot holding water. Salt air rusts the cabinet. The result is damp lint, overheating, blown fuses and elements. We check the vent and the exhaust temperature first, then the heat and the drum, and write one figure. That figure has the diagnostic fee tucked in.

The dryerThe faultThe answer
Cold air, drum still turningElement open on electric, igniter or coils on gasReplace the failed heat part, check the fuse and airflow
Hot, then shuts off earlyA blocked vent trips the thermal fuse or high-limitOpen up the vent, install a fuse and limit, then measure airflow
Squealing grows louder as the dryer heatsDry, worn idler pulley or rollersReplace the idler, rollers and belt
Why does my Steilacoom dryer rust at the bottom?

Salt air and a damp basement. Moisture condenses on the cabinet steel and the salt speeds the rust. It is cosmetic until the drum rollers or the bottom seam go. We check both, fix what is worn, and say so straight out when the cabinet is too far gone for a repair to be sensible.

Dishwasher repair in Steilacoom

A fee for the meter visit, then part of the repair price · no quote before the measurement, no price off the ticket

Dishwashers were never part of an 1890s kitchen, so most Steilacoom units are retrofits: a cabinet cut short, a drain hose looped under a farmhouse sink, a supply line off an old valve. The machines themselves are 2000s builder-grade units failing on boards, latches and pumps. Each one is tested with a meter, any install faults we find get fixed, and you receive a single written number holding the diagnostic fee within it.

What the dishes showWhat is behind itWhat we change
Tub half full after the cycleBlocked drain pump, or a hose that loops too low beneath the sinkUnclog the pump, lift the drain loop, test the drain
Cycle refuses to begin, lights blinkWorn door latch, or a dead control boardReplace the latch or board, test the door switch
Dishes gritty, glasses filmedFilter clogged, spray arm blocked, rinse-aid dispenser deadClean the filter and arms, replace the dispenser
Can you replace a dishwasher latch in an older Steilacoom kitchen?

Yes, and latches rank among the commonest dishwasher calls here. On a 2000s unit the latch wears until the door switch no longer registers a closed door, and the panel simply blinks. It is a short job with the door open, priced in writing, and a full cycle runs before we go.

Oven and range repair in Steilacoom

A fee for the meter visit, then part of the repair price · no quote before the measurement, no price off the ticket

Gas came to Steilacoom kitchens long after the houses were built, so the ranges are retrofits in rooms that once held a wood stove, with flexible lines behind them and igniters that are now twenty years old. Wall ovens from 1960s remodels burn out elements. We repair gas and electric, glass-top and wall units. The bad part gets named, the figure is written down, and the total takes your diagnostic fee into itself.

Burner or ovenThe failureThe work done
Oven element glows, flame never comesAged bake igniter that has weakenedReplace the igniter, check the valve current
Cooktop burner clicks without lightingA wet electrode from a boil-over, or a failing spark moduleDry and test, replace the electrode or module
Wall oven bake element deadElement burned open, sometimes the relay boardReplace the element, test the board output
Do you work on the wall oven in my 1960s Steilacoom remodel?

Yes. Wall ovens from that era are simple and parts for most are still available: bake and broil elements, thermostats, selector switches. The unit slides out far enough for us to get at the back, replace what has failed, and set the temperature with a probe. One written number, warranty on the invoice.

Ice maker repair in Steilacoom

A fee for the meter visit, then part of the repair price · no quote before the measurement, no price off the ticket

An ice maker in a Steilacoom kitchen is usually fed by a line that snakes behind cabinets built long before refrigerators had plumbing, off a shut-off valve that has not been turned in years. Kinks, weeps and a valve that never fully opens are common. Add a worn module and you have an empty bin. We repair the maker inside your refrigerator and price it as one figure with the diagnosis fee inside it.

In the ice binThe reason behind itHow we fix it
No ice, maker never movesModule stalled or the fill valve closedReplace the module, test the valve, run a harvest
Trickle fill, hollow cubesSupply line kinked behind the cabinets, or the shut-off half closedReroute or replace the line, check pressure at the valve
Wet cabinet, ice clumpedFill tube dripping or cracked, valve leaking byReplace the tube and valve, clear the bin
My ice maker in Steilacoom stopped after the shut-off was bumped. Fixable?

Usually in one visit. Old shut-off valves seize or half close and the maker starves. We check pressure at the refrigerator, replace the valve or line, and confirm the fill volume. If the maker itself has worn out from the years, the replacement is on the van for most common models.

Steilacoom questions

Is Steilacoom inside your service ring from Lacey?

Yes. It is at the northern edge of the ring we cover, reached up I-5 through DuPont, and there is no mileage line or travel charge for it. We tend to schedule Steilacoom and DuPont on the same run so the van comes north loaded with the parts for both towns.

Is it possible to move a washer out of my Steilacoom basement?

Usually. Old basement stairs are narrow and turn, and we bring a second person and straps when the job needs the machine moved. Most repairs, pumps, gaskets, locks and boards, are done in place with the machine pulled forward a foot, so the stair only matters when the tub itself has to come out.

Does salt air really damage appliances on the Steilacoom bluff?

It does. Condenser coils, dryer cabinets and the steel frames of ranges corrode faster within a few blocks of the water. Every refrigerator call includes a coil cleaning and a fan check, and you hear from us when a coil has gone beyond cleaning. It is the single most local failure we see in town.

What is the price rule for a Steilacoom visit?

Your visit fee, named by dispatch at booking, buys the technician, the meter work and a diagnosis on site. Say yes to the fix and that money simply starts the repair total. Say no and the visit ends with that charge alone. A repair price appears only after the diagnosis, written down, and the invoice prints how long the warranty lasts.

How a visit runs

From the first phone call to the last test cycle

  1. You reach out

Dispatch picks a two-hour slot with you, most often today or tomorrow, and calls again once the van rolls away from the shop on Marvin Rd.

  2. Measure first

An amp clamp, thermometer or ohmmeter goes on the machine before anyone says what is wrong. Then the dead part gets named in words anyone can follow.

  3. The number, written

Repair cost goes on the ticket as one total with the visit fee already baked in. Say yes or say no; nobody bills by the hour while you think.

  4. Repair on the spot

Pumps, valves, heaters, igniters, rollers and boards for the usual models travel in the bins behind the driver, which closes most jobs on that first stop. A part on order means a second trip at no added charge.

  5. Test and paperwork

You watch a full cycle run, the floor and panels are left as we found them, and an emailed invoice carries the written warranty term.

Steilacoom: book a two-hour window.

Roughly 18 minutes from our Marvin Rd shop, with no mileage on the invoice. The meter visit leads to one written number and a warranty term on the invoice.
