Dishwashers around Long Lake and the Lakes
A dishwasher at the Lakes lives on whatever water the house has, and around Southwick Lake and out Mullen Rd that is a private well: harder than Lacey's city supply, with iron, sometimes a little sand, and a softener in the garage that somebody has to remember to salt. When the salt runs out, the dishwasher tells on it first, with a chalk line on the element and glasses that go grey in a week. The van drops south from the Marvin Rd shop and along Carpenter Rd with descaler, inlet valves and elements, and the technician asks about the softener before the lower rack comes out, because the fault is often upstream of the machine.
The kitchens themselves are lake-cabin kitchens, remodeled once in the 1980s and again since. A dishwasher that was squeezed into a cabinet built for a smaller one sits crooked and leaks at the door; a Kenmore from the 1990s remodel next to a Bosch from the last one. Most of these houses are on septic, so we say the same thing at every one: scrape the plates, do not count on the dishwasher to grind, and keep the filter clean. Winter closures matter too. A second home on Long Lake that was shut down in October with water in the sump comes back in April with a pump that has seized and a smell that has been building since Thanksgiving.
What goes wrong with Lakes dishwashers, and why
White crust on the element and the racks
Well-water scale, or a softener whose salt ran out. The element still heats until the crust insulates it, and the spray-arm holes close one by one. We test the element, descale what can be saved, and tell you whether the softener needs attention. Only the failed part goes on the written figure.
Water standing in the tub the next morning
The drain pump may have failed or clogged on a pit or a shard, a check valve stuck open may let sink water run back, or the drain hose may lack a high loop beneath the counter. The sump is pulled, the pump cleared and its motor measured, and the hose examined before we call the pump guilty.
Fills slowly, or the cycle runs long
The inlet valve is choked by iron and sand from the well, or the pressure at the house is low. We time the fill, check the screen at the valve and the pressure at the tap, then replace the valve if that is where the restriction is. A softener resin bed shedding into the line does the same thing.
Gritty or still-dirty dishes
Suspects are a filter untouched since the remodel, spray arms scaled shut, and a wash motor that has grown weak. Filter and sump get cleaned, the arms cleared, and the motor is measured while working. On the Bosch and KitchenAid in the redone kitchens, the diverter or the circulation pump is the usual part.
Leak at the door corner onto the floor
An aged gasket gone flat, a split lower seal, or a machine sitting off level in a cabinet it never quite fit could be behind it. We pull the kick panel and run a cycle, eyes on the joints. Sometimes the fix is a gasket; sometimes it is leveling the legs and re-securing the machine to the counter.
Panel dead after the winter shutdown
A second home on Pattison Lake reopened in spring has a dishwasher that sat with water in it for months. The pump has seized or the board has corroded at the door. We unstick or replace the pump, test the board, and run a hot cycle to clear what grew in the tub.
The dishwasher visit at the Lakes, in order
- Softener and well asked about first, hardness judged before a part is blamed
- Filter, sump, pump and inlet valve inspected, plus meter readings taken
- A single written repair price, with the diagnosis fee rolled into an approved total
- Pumps, inlet valves, elements, gaskets and latches carried for the common models
- Complete cycle watched, floor dry, warranty term printed on the invoice
Dishwasher repair at Long Lake that starts with the water
At a Lakes dishwasher the technician looks at the element and the racks before running anything, because scale tells a story about the well and the softener that the meter cannot. Next the filter is pulled and the sump examined for whatever last summer's guests fed it. With the kick panel off the machine runs: the drain pump is measured, the inlet valve timed and its screen checked for iron and sand, and the wash motor heard under load with its current read. Codes are read on Bosch and KitchenAid; on the older Kenmore and Whirlpool units the technician watches the timer. The drain hose is followed to the sink for its high loop. The fault is written in plain words with one figure.
Kenmore, Whirlpool and Frigidaire units from the remodel years are still in most Lakes kitchens, with Bosch, KitchenAid and GE in the ones redone recently. Owners who only spend summers at Long Lake approve the written figure by email after seeing a photo, then receive the invoice and warranty in an email, and the technician points out the shutoff so the house can be closed properly come fall. Every kitchen on Carpenter Rd sees identical pricing. The visit and diagnosis carry one fee, quoted when you book, and after you approve a repair, that fee never lands a second time on top of the repair figure. The number itself arrives after diagnosis, on paper, and the warranty term sits on your invoice.
Asked in Long Lake & the Lakes
Is the white film on everything the dishwasher’s fault, or the water’s, at our Hicks Lake house?
Usually water. Hard well water and a softener out of salt leave minerals behind that build on the element and the glasses. The element and dispenser get tested; when the machine is working, you hear that the water is responsible and what to do about it. If the element has failed under the crust, that goes on the written number.
Our Long Lake house is on septic. Does that change how you fix a dishwasher?
It changes the advice, not the repair. We say scrape rather than grind, keep the filter clean, and go easy on the detergent. The machine is diagnosed and repaired the same way as anywhere, with the diagnosis visit first and one written figure after.
We reopen the lake cabin every spring and the dishwasher smells and will not drain. Why?
Water sat in the sump all winter, and the pump seized or the tub grew what tubs grow. The pump is freed or replaced, the sump cleaned out, and a hot cycle run. Before closing up in October, run a cycle and leave the door ajar; we will show you the steps while we are there.
Can you fit a dishwasher back into a cabinet in a 1970s lake kitchen that was not built for it?
We can level and secure a machine that is in the cabinet and stop the leak that a crooked fit causes, and that is part of the repair when the leak is the complaint. Rebuilding the cabinet belongs to a carpenter, and we would tell you that instead of pretending otherwise.
What does a dishwasher repair cost at the Lakes?
The diagnosis has a fee, given when you book. Once it is done, the repair becomes a single written figure that takes in the diagnosis, and nothing comes from a price list because a no-drain call can mean a pit in the pump or a whole new pump. Should the figure not suit you, that fee is the entire charge, and no mileage or driveway fee applies anywhere around the lakes.

From the first phone call to the last test cycle
- You reach out
Dispatch picks a two-hour slot with you, most often today or tomorrow, and calls again once the van rolls away from the shop on Marvin Rd.
- Measure first
An amp clamp, thermometer or ohmmeter goes on the machine before anyone says what is wrong. Then the dead part gets named in words anyone can follow.
- The number, written
Repair cost goes on the ticket as one total with the visit fee already baked in. Say yes or say no; nobody bills by the hour while you think.
- Repair on the spot
Pumps, valves, heaters, igniters, rollers and boards for the usual models travel in the bins behind the driver, which closes most jobs on that first stop. A part on order means a second trip at no added charge.
- Test and paperwork
You watch a full cycle run, the floor and panels are left as we found them, and an emailed invoice carries the written warranty term.
